Tomorrow, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) is voting on legislation to help to conserve forage fish such as menhaden, river herring, and American shad that are critical for birds and ocean wildlife. Over 128,000 public comments were received on menhaden, the most in the 70 year history of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. For more information about the campaign and to learn what you can do to take action, watch the video and visit Pew Environment group at http://www.pewenvironment.org/campaigns/atlantic-menhaden-campaign/id/85899364506

Successful Fall Clean-Up!
Thanks to all our volunteers and sponsors who helped make SHA’s Fall Clean-Up a success! We had 32 volunteers spend their Saturday morning cleaning up the Blythe Township road below Silver Creek Reservoir. In addition, the Blackrock Motorsports group removed over 120 tires from a pit on Reading Anthracite Property. Finally, the Trout Unlimited Schuylkill Chapter cleaned a pond in New Philadelphia. Also, Girl Scout Troop 31058 was in participation.
The event was hosted by Schuylkill Headwaters and Blackrock Motorsports, and was part of Schuylkill County Make a Difference Day and the International Coastal Cleanup. Volunteers removed a total of 2.3 TONS of trash, including sofas, toilets, construction materials, and bottles. We are currently working to remove the remaining tires from the site, and hope to have another clean-up event in the future.

Pew Environment Group alert- vote for Menhaden!
Click link to fill out the voter comment form: https://secure3.convio.net/pew/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=1554
Vote for Menhaden! The comment period for this alert closes on November 16th.
Fishery managers need to hear from you! Let them know you vote for recovery NOW for the most important fish in the sea.
In a landmark move last year, East Coast fishery managers—responding to a plea for action by more than 90,000 people like you—committed to advancing new protections for Atlantic menhaden. Now we need your help to make sure these plans become real improvements on the water.
Menhaden populations have plummeted 90 percent over the past 25 years and remain at an all-time low—just 10 percent of historic levels. Because these small fish are prey for larger animals, this decline threatens to disrupt coastal and marine food webs and affect the thousands of fishing, whale-watching, and bird-watching businesses that menhaden help support.
We need to leave more menhaden in the ocean to promote their recovery. There is no limit on the total amount of these fish that can be caught at sea. Every year, hundreds of millions of them are ground up to make fertilizer; fish meal for farm animals, pets, and aquaculture; and oil for dietary supplements.
On Dec. 14, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission will make decisions that are critical to the recovery of Atlantic menhaden and the ocean wildlife that depends on them for food.Let the commission know that it’s time to bring the menhaden fishery into the 21st century.

New water app in celebration of the Clean water act
new water app in celebration of the Clean water act
Today, on the 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, EPA is launching a new app and website to help people find information on the condition of thousands of lakes, rivers and streams across the United States from their smart phone, tablet or desktop computer. Available at http://www.epa.gov/mywaterway, the How’s My Waterway app and website uses GPS technology or a user-entered zip code or city name to provide information about the quality of local water bodies.
This website is really great! You can find reports for Schuylkill County streams by entering your zipcode and clicking ‘reports’ under the list of streams.

Veolia Water Releases Study on Process to Remove Pharmaceuticals, Phosphorus from Wastewater
New technology removes 75% of pharmaceuticals in wastewater
Veolia Water North America announced study findings that showed the successful removal of pharmaceuticals and phosphorus from wastewater using its Actiflo Carb technology. Over the course of an eight-week study, the presence of phosphorus and a variety of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), ranging from ointments to medications, were monitored after adding Actiflo Carb to the traditional wastewater treatment process. With the use of Actiflo Carb, 75% of the selected PPCPs were removed from the wastewater.

Shad Journals are here!
The Schuylkill River Sojourn is a 7-day, 112 mile guided canoe and kayak trip on the Schuylkill River beginning in Schuylkill Haven and ending in Philadelphia. Throughout the Sojourn, four ‘Stanley Shad’ cut-outs travelled the length of the Schuylkill taped to kayakers’ boats. Schuylkill Action Network hosted this project to increase awareness about recreational and cultural importance of the Schuylkill River. SHA a Beneficiary of Lehigh Anthracite Golf Outing
On July 12, 2012, Lehigh Anthracite held its first annual benefit golf outing at the beautiful Valley Country Club in Sugarloaf. The beneficiaries of the outing were Saint Luke’s Miners Memorial Hospital and Schuylkill Headwaters Association. Lehigh Anthracite hosted the entire affair and reached out to their corporate partners and vendors to become sponsors to make the outing successful. At the end of the day, Saint Luke’s and Schuylkill Headwaters each received $8,500.
Lehigh Anthracite acquired the Lehigh Coal and Navigation (LC&N) holdings located in the Tamaqua area a couple years ago. Since the takeover, Lehigh Anthracite has shown to be a class act with a deep interest in being a good neighbor while still operating a profitable business. The company is still in a start-up mode but even with the challenges of bringing a new business on-line, Lehigh Anthracite is willing to reach out and offer their support to their new neighbors.
Included in the purchase of LC&N are all the responsibilities and problems associated with the Route 309 discharge. Located along the southern boundary of Tamaqua Borough, this discharge is the largest abandoned mine drainage discharge on the Little Schuylkill River. Lehigh Anthracite immediately sought answers to treating the discharge from its first day of ownership. Communication between Lehigh, SHA, and the Schuylkill Conservation District has been open and on-going in an effort to do a better job of treating the discharge and cleaning up the river. Some might say it is a requirement of their permit to operate a coal mining operation, but spend some time with these folks and you will soon understand they are willing to do more than what is required.
The following is an excerpt from Lehigh’s webpage.
Our Pledge To The Environment
We take our stewardship of the land very seriously. This commitment follows the tradition of one of our partners, Robindale Energy Services, the largest refuse coal reclamation company in the United States. Our first Lehigh project involves restoring a mine pit that is 1½ miles long, half a mile wide, and 800 feet deep. We are filling this scar with 10 million cubic yards of soil, then planting and reseeding it to reclaim the site.
SHA is grateful to be the beneficiary of this support from Lehigh Anthracite and we look forward to collaborating with them on future efforts aimed at water quality improvements and mine land reclamation. Working together we can and will make a difference.
